SUMMER 2011 in review: Block Island

What better place for a magical cousincation than sleepy, charming Block Island? My two New-England-savvy cousins and I hit the sand and country roads with our shades and our bikes, and I ate lobster twice a day. I’d say that’s #winning!

I’m sad to leave summer behind. Oh, man–I really am. And, apparently, my obsession will anything quaint and New-England-y continues (I stopped at every old shuttered cottage and each picket fence I passed on BI, making me a most obnoxious afternoon-stroll partner…”where’d she go? Oh, she’s wayyy back there crouching in front of something…”)

But this post is the first of many Summer 2011 in Review posts that will help summer stay alive. Images of cousins laughing… sandy beaches, inside jokes and the collecting of stones… the sounds of roaring tides from outside our window at the Avonlea… my shrine to Summer 2011 starts… NOW.

Time passes sweetly: Costa Rica, Part 1

Time passing is cool.

Ugh! What?

That makes no sense.

But, yes!

Time passing, with its little markers in the sand, little days and weeks and little years, all tied up with ribbon every 365 days and topped with a number and a ritual, is… cool.

It’s cool to have occasion to tally up your joys and accomplishments, count happy laughing faces at your dinner table, count inhales and exhales on your yoga mat.

It’s cool to be aware that sometimes time passes slowly and sometimes quickly, and the only difference between the two is a quarter-turn adjustment on your worldview-o-meter. It’s cool to face your skeletons, and realize that while you were staring them down, you were concentrating so hard that you rose up, up, up and away from rock bottom, rose up on a cloud of tenacity, rising up without even knowing you’d left.

It’s cool to be in a place that engenders such reflection. I recently turned 30 and a short time later found myself in this golden-lit, salty-magical place, pondering the things that make us surfers yogis humans tick.

It’s cool to be in Nosara, Costa Rica.

p.s. More on LifePose Yoga, Del Mar Surf Camp, Harmony Hotel, Experience Nosara and Cafe De Paris in part 2.
p.p.s. Julie Torsiello… you hang the moon!

p.p.p.s For those who are aware of my EPIC stand-up paddleboard wipeout… YES the video is coming up!

Dream a little dream of Sebastiani

When you come back from a trip full of gorgeous California days, each one featuring a lazy, warm afternoon punctuated by a pink sunset, it’s hard to decide which afternoon was your favorite. Unless, of course, you happen to have decided to drive north-north-north to the rolling hills of Sonoma… up, up, up to where the air smells like a vibrant, verdant painting and the hills are dotted with vines.

I dreamt a little dream of what Sonoma would look like when I arrived, and the reality was even sweeter… I couldn’t have been more delighted with what I found when I arrived at Sebastiani Winery. Manicured grounds, wide swaths of green grass and an outdoor colonnaded hallway lined with bistro chairs… the kind you could really sink into while the gracious and twinkly-eyed staff told you a story or two about the winery’s history. Plus, the tasting room itself is luxe and large… and I saved the best part for last… THE WINE.

Have a retreat coming up? Steer your boss to this place, STAT. Ladies’ weekend? CHECK. Jack-and-Jill Bachelor party? DEFINITELY.

I’ll see you there!

It Takes A Village

Well, yes, DUH, it takes a village to raise a child.

BUT!

AND!

It takes a village to dream of, play with, entice, cement and celebrate a career. It’s a lifelong endeavor that is never finished.

With arms open wide and a twinkle in my eye, I’m headed to my home state of California for twelve days of exciting, collaborative photoshoots with more than ten different fantastic teams. I aim high! I plan to be surprised, fulfilled, rained on, tuckered out, filled with glee (and tortilla chips!) and most of all, I am to GET INSPIRED.

<3

P.s. You know me, folks... I'll likely be live-tweeting, daily blogging and filming the whole thing--stay tuned and stay in touch!

amaze. delish. spectac.

I’m originally from California, it’s true. I grew up within earshot of the ocean and with a handful of orange poppies in my hand, and these are things I often miss.

But during my seven years in New York, I’ve delighted in a growing romance with all things East Coast. All things quaint, colonial and historical, all things that could possibly be considered New England-y. I’ve ooh and ahhh’d at shutters on cottages, marveled at the changing seasons, indulged in a Philly cheesesteak, popped my polo shirt collar on Martha’s Vineyard and stuffed my face with lobster. I’ve even dropped the word “wicked” a time or two! (Just kidding, I’ve never done that)

But the one thing I’d yet to check off my list was… APPLE PICKING! So the lades (<—not a typo, lady + babe = lade) and I set off one impeccable crisp morning for Blue Jay Orchard in Connecticut to complete this tasty East Coast tradition. I expected gorgeous vistas, I expected a quaint market shop, but I did NOT expect that the apples themselves would be so DELISH! My favorite was, of course, the Granny Smith apple.

And, being the multi-tasking city folk that we were, we decided to bust out a lifestyle photoshoot that same afternoon, since model Kellie (the one and only) was in attendance! Below are some of our photos, a mix of the portfolio-bound pictures and the scrapbook-bound. <3

Part 1: THE LONDON DIARIES

Cheerio! Back from foggy Londontown, and so stoked to share photos from the trip! The thing was–it wasn’t foggy at all! In fact, compared with an NYC summer that has featured temps akin to those in Miami, the London weather was literally EUPHORIC. 70 and sunny!

We stayed in a hotel that was actually a townhouse (cool!) and wandered around the neighborhoods as though we were locals, just breezing in and out and exploring as we saw fit. The neighborhoods were completely adorable and quiet, and we LOVED our corner chippy by the week’s end. Like, a LOT.

Tea and scones at Fortnum and Mason are up in Part 2! <3

Fallbrook, CA

What a lovely, wine-country-looking, napa-like town, just halfway between San Diego and Temecula! Saw some fun desert-y California flora and fauna that was new to my eyeballs… <3

Around the Vineyard!

Sweet summer! Ahhhh, toes in the cool, clear water… strolls on the bluff with ice cream in hand and a best friend in tow–these are my favorite parts of summer, and NOBODY does Summer like Martha and her Vineyard. Rachael and I SO enjoyed our frolic around this amazing island! <3
